Defenders of Ekron adds elements of exploration to its shmup play, giving players a transforming, customizable mech they can use to seek out their enemies in sprawling environments before switching to a short range combat mode to shoot or swat down foes.

Defenders of Ekron has players controlling Eneas, a pilot of a mech called an Anakim. He will soon find himself fighting other Anakim pilots who have gone rogue, with players tasked with bringing these dangerous fighters down.

The player’s Anakim is a changing mech, one that has a high-speed mode that can be used to explore the game’s large environments, which give the game a feeling of dungeon crawling as players work through its large areas. Should they find an enemy, players can shift to a short range mode that lets them fir various weapons in all directions, as well as use the mech’s arms to clobber close-range foes, until all threats have been eliminated.

To better deal with rogue pilots and huge war machines, players can upgrade their Anakim, unlocking several different weapon types, increasing the mech’s durability and speed, or tweaking other aspects of its makeup to better customize it for their play style.

Defenders of Ekron is available now on Steam and the Playstation Store.
