Nintendo shadowdropped a free Switch 2 update for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD that adds Dixie Kong as a playable character. It also adds a new Turbo Attack mode. Once applied, the patch includes a number of other additions that implement expected Switch 2 features, such as GameShare. Anyone with a copy of the Switch game can access the additions immediately.
The general updates are that the remaster now displays at an even higher resolution on the console, has faster load times, and supports GameShare for local co-op multiplayer. The other additions affect gameplay. When Dixie Kong is set as DK’s partner in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, it will affect his jumps. She can spin her ponytail when the character leaps to provide longer airtime and hovering and for a slightly higher jump. Turbo Attack, as the name suggests, involves faster levels. That includes a timer at the bottom showing how much time you have to finish each stage.
Here’s the trailer for the update:
This marks the fourth Nintendo platform with exclusive elements for this particular title. The game first appeared on the Wii in 2010. The 2013 3DS version added 3D support, more levels, and an easier New Mode. The Switch remaster showed up in 2024.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is available on the Switch, and its Switch 2 patch with new compatibility updates and content like playable Dixie Kong is live worldwide. The game is also on the Wii and 3DS.
