While you can rent audio CDs and DVDs, you can’t rent video games in Japan. That’s part of the reason why the used game market is so big. Players purchase games at launch and race to beat them so they can sell them back for maximum value.
Dragon Quest X is the first game in over two decades you can legally rent. Square Enix and Tsutaya, a chain of DVD/CD/game stores in Japan, will rent Dragon Quest X for eight days and seven nights – for free. The rental version also includes a code to play Dragon Quest X online.
After the eight day trial, you can purchase Dragon Quest X from Tsutaya for 3,800 yen ($46). The game retails for up to 6,980 yen ($85). Saved data from the rental version will carry over to the full version of Dragon Quest X.
