Dragon Quest XI’s First 3DS Footage Shows Its 2D And 3D Styles

Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest XI is in development for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. While the PS4 version has impressive graphics using the Unreal Engine 4, the 3DS version also has its own unique touch, with a mix of 2D and 3D graphics in two screens.

The top screen shows more of a modern Nintendo 3DS-style look for Dragon Quest XI, while the bottom screen depicts the game in 2D, similar to the older Super Famicom era Dragon Quest titles.

Unlike the PlayStation 4 version, Dragon Quest XI’s characters on 3DS have been remade to have a super-deformed look. As far as battles go, you’ll see the monsters walking around on the top screen as part of its symbol encounter system, while it’ll show up as random encounter.

Additionally, players will get to switch to a 2D mode for battles, as shown at the 2:45 mark, where you can see the top screen have more of an older Dragon Quest look to it.

At the 3:58 mark, they show what the events look like on the screens. Just like the rest of the game, you can see the newer style on the top screen and the older style on the bottom. In case you’d like to get a good look at both versions without missing anything, the game will let you revisit scenes to check them out again.
