DuckTales Remastered Hands On: Capcom Added More "Tale" In DuckTales

Recommended Videos

DuckTales Remastered from Capcom and WayForward is a HD remake of the 24 year old Nintendo game. I got to play a little bit of Ducktales Remastered which starts by letting players select the difficulty – easy, normal or hard. After you decide, the demo whisks players away to Transylvania where Uncle Scrooge’s nemesis Magica De Spell resides.

DuckTales Remastered shows Uncle Scrooge talking to Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby walking towards a castle as a group. These scenes have full voice acting with some of the original voice actors like Alan Young for Uncle Scrooge and June Foray for Magica de Spell. Uncle Scrooge asks the boys to wait while he scouts the area, but Huey, Dewey, and Louie get excited and run right into a trap door on the floor. With the boys in danger, Uncle Scrooge tells Webby to wait at the entrance. That’s more story than I remember in DuckTales for the NES and Ducktales Remastered fills in gaps that explain why Uncle Scrooge’s actions.

While the cutscenes were new, the Transylvania level felt like it had the same layout. This level has skeleton ducks for Uncle Scrooge to pogo stick on and duck mummies you can unravel with a cane smack. One difference is you don’t have to press down while jumping to do a pogo attack. DuckTales Remastered uses the control scheme from DuckTales 2 where you only need to hold attack while jumping to bounce on enemies. The NES game has players press attack plus the down button. If you prefer the original controls you can select "Hard Pogo" from the main menu.

DuckTales has plenty of hidden stuff like gems you can grab by pogo sticking in the right place and secret passages where you might find an item that increases Scrooge’s maximum health. You can also snag even more gems while riding a mine cart and jumping in the air at the right time. What does all of this money do? Well, you can swim in it. A new feature lets players dive into Scrooge McDuck’s vault and swim through a (virtual) fortune.

Ducktales Remastered is slated for release this summer on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Wii U’s eShop.
