Electronic Arts shut down BioWare, which means a major RPG developer founded in Canada around three decades ago in 1995 and owned by EA since 2007 is now closed. The studio will also end development on the next Mass Effect game, effectively canceling the series. This means that, as far as things go now, there will be no Mass Effect 5.

In a post on BioWare’s social media account, the studio announced it is closed and listed some of the most popular series it released. It then stated that its current focus is on the “incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games and supporting one another through this transition.” At the end of the post, it thanked players for enjoying and engaging with the RPGs that it created, as well as citing appreciation for its fans for “being the most meaningful part of our story.”

Since its founding in 1995, BioWare released several successful and popular RPG franchises. These include Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Neverwinter Nights. The last game it released was 2024’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Electronic Arts shutting down BioWare has to do with its larger scale studio restructuring. The parent company also laid off 3% of its global workforce.

BioWare has closed as of October 21, 2026. The next Mass Effect game, which would have been Mass Effect 5 and was in early stages of its development, will no longer come out.
