The Japanese fighting game community just got some exciting news, as EVO Japan organizers announced the dates for the big tournament as well as a lead-up tournament called “Sai” that takes place this May.

Evo Japan tournament organizers revealed that the Evolution Championship Series will have its first ever tournament in Japan and it’ll be held on January 26 through 28, 2018 at the Akihabara UDX in Tokyo.

In addition to the schedule announcement for EVO Japan 2018, a new tournament called “sài” was also announced as a way to bring the Japanese fighting game community together before the big event. Think of it as a “road to EVO Japan 2018” type of deal.

It’ll be a double-eliminations format tournament and will feature Tekken 7: Fated Retribution and Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 as two main titles with one more main event title that has yet to be announced.

Sai will take place on May 20 through 21, 2017, at the Akihabara UDX, the same location as EVO Japan 2018. The tournament will be free to enter, so we can expect to see a lot of participants at the event.

EVO Japan was first revealed at last year’s Evolution Championship Series and it was revealed at Tokyo Game Show that they were looking to make it happen sometime in January 2018.
