FFVII Rebirth Yuffie Voice Actress Shared Singing and Motion Sickness Memories

Square Enix’s latest entry in its Final Fantasy VII Rebirth voice actor interviews featured Suzie Yeung, the actress behind Yuffie Kisaragi, discussing that entry and the FFVII Remake INTERmission DLC. In particular, she talked about the challenges of recording the scenes when Yuffie was motion sick or singing.

Yuffie suffers from motion sickness when riding in most vehicles Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. As such, Yeung had to act out her feeling ill after experiences riding in mine carts or cars. She expressed that her performance was such that she was eventually told to tone it down. Here’s her exact quote from the interview:

I just remember when we were playing it out, my director, Kirk Thornton, was like, “Ok, I need you to really act like you’re vomiting right now. I need you actually hurl chunks!” So, I was trying to give my grossest reaction – and it was great and really fun!

I’m sorry to all the sympathetic vomiters out there.

But then the team were like, “Actually, you need to tone it down – they don’t really like that.”

In the original take it was quite a lot! Hopefully it’s scaled back a little in the actual game (laughs).

Yeung also expressed the difficulty that came from moments when Yuffie would sing in FFVII Rebirth, since she doesn’t consider herself a singer. While she didn’t recount the exact song and spot, she mentioned the effort that went into that performance as well.

I distinctly remember an interaction where she starts singing. I had to memorize the tune and they had actual lyrics written out. I think it took the entire session because I am not a singer and they had to try really hard to get it right (laughs).

This is one of multiple entries in a series of official interviews with FFVII Rebirth English voice actors. Past ones also involved talks with Cody Christian (Cloud) and Britt Baron (Tifa) about their roles and performances.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and its demo are available on the PS5, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Ever Crisis is available on the PC and mobile devices.
