When Street Fighter II was the hottest thing in the world, the floodgates opened for 2D fighting clones. Most stood out on their own with an original cast of characters and gameplay tweaks except for Fighter’s History. Data East’s fighting game was a little too similar to Street Fighter II so similar that Capcom sued Data East. Data East ended up winning the suit, but their characters still felt like Street Fighter II clones to fans. It’s been over a decade since anything has been done with the Fighter’s History and out of nowhere SNK picks up the rights to Ray McDougal and the rest of the cast in exchange for letting G Mode use the SNK characters in mobile phone games. Since SNK has the rights it’s possible that the Sagat clone, Mizoguchi Makoto, or any other Fighter’s History character can appear in King of Fighters XII. G Mode is certainly making use of the license with a Garou versus Fighters History Dynamite game is coming to mobile phones coming out this spring.
