Earlier in August 2019, there were rumors suggesting a Final Fantasy VIII Remastered physical release was in the cards. Play-Asia had listings for them, for example. However, Square Enix has issued an official press release confirming it won’t be an option and those product pages are now gone.

The Japanese Final Fantasy VIII Remastered press release noted that all of the versions of the game will be available as downloads only. This note shows up underneath all four platforms it will be available on, showing there will be no exception.

In addition to confirming there will only be Final Fantasy VIII Remastered digital copies, Square Enix announced sales figures for this installment so far. February 11, 2019 was its 20th anniversary, and it has seen over 9.6 million copies sold worldwide.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 3, 2019.
