During an official Nintendo Ask the Developers interview, Intelligent Systems Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara, IS Producer Masahiro Higuchi, Nintendo Associate Producer Kenta Nakanishi, and Nintendo Producer Genki Yokota revealed that data tied to characters over multiple Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave playthroughs will merge together. This means someone’s decisions in multiple runs or routes will come together in later parts to offer more options for those units in other portions of the upcoming game. This applies to both the protagonist lords like Cai, Dietrich, Leda, and Theodora and the allies someone may pick up along the way.

Kusakihara was the first to mention how data for characters will merge in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave to take into account how someone builds someone in both the playthrough for one route or if they’re recruited in another one. Yokota then said, “…if you complete one playthrough with the protagonist developed as a mage and a second with the same protagonist developed with melee combat in mind, that character will acquire the strengths of both.” So say someone decided to make Leda use melee attacks in one run for the first part, then magic in another, she would be well-versed and ready for both roles in the next.

Higuchi then noted this data merge feature applies to all characters in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, like the members of a lord’s factions, ones from other groups, and mercenaries you might recruit. He noted, “Let’s say you recruit the same character to your unit in both Cai’s route and Dietrich’s route and build them differently in each playthrough. The stats from both versions will later be merged, resulting in an even stronger character.”

Nakanishi then followed this up by explaining why there’s only one save file for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. The associate producer noted multiple ones “would create system-related complications.” He then noted, to mitigate issues, they implemented the data merging and “preserved save data from the start of every chapter for each main protagonist, and made it possible for players to jump back to those points.” Nakanishi also confirmed “there are no permanently missable elements.”

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will come to the Switch 2 on September 17, 2026.
