GungHo Online Entertainment will be teaming up with an all-star cast of Square Enix staff members to develop an upcoming competitive arcade game based on Puzzle & Dragons, called Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament. Dengeki shares a first look at the game, along with its first trailer.

The above is a look at the game’s protagonists Yo Minazuki and Chika Makimura, designed by Tetsuya Nomura, which shows some of his his distinct character-styles seen from his other titles such as the Kingdom Hearts series and The World Ends with You.

Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament will have online versus and story modes, with a new system based on the smartphone version of the game.

There will be many monsters from the original game, along with the addition of new ones, with a new 5×8 drops grid for more combos. Additionally, unlike the smartphone version, you won’t be limited to time, so you’ll be able to take your time and strategize your moves more efficiently.

By using “NESiCA,” a delivery system that allows you to use a card to download content from servers, you’ll be able to keep your save data, along with your monsters and their progress.

Finally, here’s a look at the game’s first trailer, and I have to say that it actually looks quite nice. According to the video, there will be tournament modes that can hold up to 16 people. The arcade game features a touch screen to keep the same feel as the original Puzzle & Dragons.

In case you’re wondering, the other characters are a magician by the name Henry Boram and a young girl named Tinnin, who has some sort of dragon powers.

Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament will be having its first location test starting on December 13 to 15.
