While there has been a resurgence of shooters, there aren’t that many cute ’em ups these days. When shooters dominated arcades, games like Fantasy Zone and Parodius focused on zany enemies instead of spaceships. Air Zonk is my favorite game from the genre and I guess Pocky & Rocky fit in here too.
Flying Hamster HD from The Game Atelier is a throwback to the mostly forgotten cute ’em up genre. You play as sunflower seed spitting Newton the Hamster who fights pharaoh penguins and otaku aliens. The PlayStation Vita version has options to use the analog stick, tilt, front touchscreen or rear touchpad to control Newton. The game has fifteen trophies and two online leaderboards.
Flying Hamster HD comes out on June 11 and will cost $3.99 on the PlayStation Store.
