Sony recently announced that they’ll present their upcoming PlayStation Vita action game, Freedom Wars, as a playable title for the first time at this year’s Jump Festa, but for those of you who’d like to check it out earlier, the game’s official website has provided us with a new “how-to-play” demonstration video.
The demonstration video starts out with a short introduction by Freedom Wars’ new mascot named “Propa,” who gives us a recap on what volunteering is about.
At 2:30 we get a look at the pre-mission screen, where you’ll be setting up your weapons, gear and other items. This is also where you’ll be setting up things such as orders you’ll be giving your partner Accessory before the fight.
From the 3:30 mark of the video, we get a look at the basic commands of Freedom Wars, starting with movement, dashing, dodge rolls, camera adjusting, and how to look at your map and menu.
Next, we get a look at the “Prisoner” use the Thorn Whip, which is easily done by facing a direction and pressing X, followed by pressing the R button to shoot your way towards where it’s attached. The Thorn Whip has an energy bar that diminishes over use, and replenishes over time. Additionally, the whip can also be used to pick up items and even for recovering knocked out allies.
At 5:35, Propa gives us a closer look at using weapons, which can be switched around by pressing the up and down buttons on the D-pad. He then shows us the various combinations that can be done, followed by a look at five different weapons and their characteristic attacks.
Close-ranged weapons are recommended for advanced players due to the risk involved, but once you get a hang of using them, they’ll prove to be deadly against the Abductors. Long-ranged weapons such as assault rifles and rocket launchers are a little easier to use, and holding down the L button allows for better aiming.
The left and right buttons on the D-pad are used for combat-purpose items like bombs and grenades, which can be used by pressing the circle button. These will help in various ways, such as blowing up an Abductor’s knee to help knock it down.
That about covers the basics of Freedom Wars. Now, at 8:00, Propa gives us a look at what it’s like to combine everything we’ve learned thus far, starting with a combination attack of slashes against an Abductor while using the Thorn Whip and sword in an Attack on Titan-like fashion. You can also use the whip to grapple a part of the beast and knock it down. Doing so with more allies will be more effective.
After taking out the Abductor, you’ll be required to retrieve the civilian and take them to safety; however, the Abductors won’t be making it easy for you, as they’ll still do their best to retrieve their hostages. By safely bringing back three civilians, you win the volunteer mission.
Freedom Wars will be coming out in 2014 for PlayStation Vita.
