Hands On Patchwork Heroes

Do you remember a windows game called Jezzball? Patchwork Heroes, a PSP game from PlayStation C.A.M.P. and Badman developer Acquire, is something like that.

Warships are about to destroy Titori’s town. You would expect him, and maybe a small army, to take to the skies. Titori does and hops into a rickety helicopter. He doesn’t fire waves of heat seeking missiles, though. Titori lands on the patchwork warship and, armed with a saw, starts cutting the warship to pieces.

You control Titori with the analog stick. Hold circle to make Titori saw. Cut pieces of the ship off and when it crashes into the ground you win! Sounds simple, but while you’re cutting away robots repair the damage and rocket launchers mounted on the ship attack you. If Titori gets hit one of his allies snaking behind him takes the blow. Titori can defeat repair robots and rocket launchers by cutting a hole around them or by having one of helpers set a bomb. When a bomb explodes it creates a huge hole, takes out any nearby enemies, and costs one helper.

Other citizens are trapped on the warship. Walk over one of their locked doors to make Titori save them. Rescued townsfolk are so grateful they follow Titori on his mission and can detonate a bomb or take hit. But, really you don’t want to use bombs if you don’t have to. Seeing how high a score you can get is part of the fun in Patchwork Heroes. Sawing off bigger chunks and keeping townsfolk alive nets you more points. That’s something to consider when deciding if you should cut the warship at its structurally weak joints or saw it straight down the middle.
