Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge is the latest entry in the Mario vs. Donkey King series. In this free-to-play Nintendo 3DS and Wii U game, people scan in an amiibo of a certain character to play through levels designed specifically for them. Nintendo recently opened the official website for the game, going over the amiibo functionality for all NFC figures released so far.

amiibo that represent Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge’s characters unlock that character in-game. For example, Mini Mario can be unlocked with the Super Mario series and Super Smash Bros. series Marios, both 30th Anniversary Marios, the Gold Edition Mario, and Doctor Mario. Yoshi is playable with the Super Mario series and Super Smash Bros. series Yoshis, all three standard Yarn Yoshis, and the Mega Yarn Yoshi. Luigi, Peach, and Bowser will be added to the game if you scan in their Super Mario series or Super Smash Bros. series figures. Toad, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., and Rosalina all each only have one amiibo available.

People can also use any other amiibo to play basic Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge levels. Scanning one of these other figures, say Pikachu or Chibi Robo as examples, will make Mini Spek a playable character. Unlike the 10 special characters, Mini Spek doesn’t have any special abilities.

Each of the Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge character’s special abilities were also named. Here’s a summary of what each character can do.

  • Mini Mario: Wall Jump
  • Mini Luigi: High Jump
  • Mini Peach: Floating Jump
  • Mini Toad: Small Crawl
  • Mini Donkey Kong: Quick Climb
  • Mini Diddy Kong: Ledge Grab
  • Mini Bowser: Bowser Bomb
  • Mini Bowser Jr: Spike Guard
  • Mini Yoshi: Eat Enemies
  • Mini Rosalina: Lunar Launch

Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge will be free on the Nintendo eShop on April 28, 2016 for both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. People who purchase an amiibo at Amazon, Best Buy, or GameStop between March 25-April 27, 2016 will receive a early access download code that will allow them to immediately download and begin playing the game.
