Sony, Guerrilla Games, and NCSoft announced that the NCSoft is developing an MMORPG based on Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West called Horizon Steel Frontiers. We’ll see it on PCs and mobile devices. Both an almost 11 minute announcement trailer and about three minute gameplay video appeared alongside the reveal. It seems designed to focus on hunting machines in a Monster Hunter style.
While the MMORPG seems early in development with no release date yet, we do know some details about it. Its setting is designed to resemble Arizona and New Mexico. When we create an avatar in this Deadlands regoin, we could make them a member of the Nora, Oseram, Tenakth, or Utaru. (The Carja weren’t mentioned in the announcement.) It’s unknown if our custom character will get to go through their own Proving yet, but we do know they will become a hunter who takes on machines. We’ll do this alone or with others, and we’ll survive based on our progress. It is unknown if the Hunters Lodge and its Hunting Grounds will also appear as a gameplay mechanic in some form.
Here’s the announcement video, which features NCSoft CCO Taekjin Kim and Executive Producer Sung-Gu Lee and Guerrilla Studio Director Jan-Bart van Beek discussing the game while footage comes up.
And here’s the full Horizon Steel Frontiers gameplay trailer showing how the PC and mobile MMORPG will work.
Horizon Steel Frontiers is in development for the PC, via NCSoft’s Purple, and mobile devices, and there’s no release window for the MMORPG yet.
