How Do ‘Timely’ Accessories Work in Final Fantasy XVI?

Final Fantasy XVI is a lot! While FFVII Remake and FFXV still had some traditional, RPG elements to their more active combat systems, this newest installment does… not! It’s a big adjustment. While there’s the whole story or standard difficulty choice in the beginning, there are four Final Fantasy XVI Timely accessories Clive can equip to make his, and by extension your, life easier.

How to find and equip the Final Fantasy XVI Timely accessories

Once you start the flashback to Clive’s youth and finish the tutorial, you’ll immediately have access to four of Final Fantasy XVI’s Timely accessories. Ring of Timely Focus, Ring of Timely Evasion, Ring of Timely Strikes, and Ring of Timely Healing will all be there. The Evasion, Healing, and Strikes accessories all essentially automate things, granting you automatic dodges, healing, and guaranteed complex combos when equipped. (You do still need to press square repeatedly for Ring of Timely Strikes.)

Ring of Timely Focus is something of the odd one out. While it doesn’t automate, it does facilitate dodging. When equipped, you’ll get more of a window to dodge, with the button you need to press shown, when one is possible.

You can only equip three rings at a time in Clive’s jewelry slots. As such, you’ll need to pick and choose in the Gear & Eikons section of the main menu. As Ring of Timely Focus and Evasion perform similarly, it’s best to go with one of the other.

But what about Torgal’s ring?

That is the one Timely accessory that shows up a bit later in Final Fantasy XVI is Ring of Timely Assistance. Once Torgal is all grown up and reunited with Clive, you automatically get this ring when he rejoins. Instead of manually directing pet commands, Torgal will react accordingly. The AI is very good and honestly, it and the Ring of Timely Focus were the two I constantly equipped.

However, as you can only have three at once, I would recommend Assistance, Focus, and Strikes as your three rings if you feel you need help. As for if you should use them, I’d say the Ring of Timely Assistance is an absolute godsend. I’ve also equipped both Ring of Timely Evasion and Ring of Timely Focus if I felt like my hands were starting to ache.

Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PlayStation 5. There is a six-month exclusivity period.
