In an Iwata asks interview, Mistwalker founder and The Last Story director Hironobu Sakaguchi discussed why the game is called The Last Story.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said the game’s title appears to have the feeling that Sakaguchi is giving the game all of his strength. Sakaguchi said he gives everything whenever he works on and leaves with the feeling that he could end his career with that game. “But, this time that feeling is especially strong,” Sakaguchi said.
Iwata replied, “You’re pouring so much into this you wouldn’t have any regrets even if this were your last…”
“If I fail I would be asked to retire,” Sakaguchi joked. Iwata laughed back and said later when he heard the name of the title from a Nintendo employee he had the feeling Sakaguchi resolved to make a great game.
