In Monster Hunter Wilds, it is possible to find and fight a Blangonga before the Chapter 4 campaign sends you after one. If you’re exploring the world after the events of Chapter 3 end, you’ll very likely run into at least one, as it’s a pretty common opponent in one area.
Where do I find the Blangonga in Monster Hunter Wilds?
When you’re going through the Chapter 4 quests, you’ll experience both a mainline quest and one optional side quest from Alma that involves facing Blangonga. However, you don’t need to wait until then. You can face one sooner! Which I recommend, as the armor has the pretty great War Cry set bonus that helps with boosting attack, it has an Agitator skill to help with boosting attack when an opponent is enraged, and you have a Counterstrike skill to boost the power of your attacks after a monster attacks you. It’s a solid set to complete and equip as you wait for more powerful opponents to appear.
You’ll only see Blangonga in the Cliffs. I’ve seen them in areas 7 and 10, but in generally they’ll be in the middle or lower level. Defeating one once unlocks an Optional Quest tied to them at the Quest Counter. Also, as typical for these endgame fights, it might show up at Wounded Hollow.

How do I beat a Blangonga?
A Blangonga is a less annoying Congalala. It’s going to smack and swipe with its front paws. It’ll try and do the whole rear up on its hind legs, then slam down charge. The two noticeable differences with this Fanged Beast is that it will also occasionally “lift up” a rock out of the ground to chuck at enemies and it could inflict Frostblight or Iceblight by going on all fours, settling up, and breathing out a stream of icy breath back and forth in front of it. Both the bolder throw and icy blast are very telegraphed, so it is very easy to get out of the way of it and avoid the status ailment. Also, while it will use a Weak Roar, I feel like it doesn’t happen as often as it does for some Wyverns, so it’s less of a disruption to your combos.
The best spots to attack a Blangonga are the head or torso, with the head being most susceptible and breakable. You can break the rear or tail too, and odds are that will happen naturally as you dart behind it to evade the boulder throws or ice breath and continue your attack. Flash Pods, Pitfall Traps, and Shock Traps will work on it, Fire attacks are effective, and you can inflict every type of status effect.
Don’t bother with Ice or Dragon attacks, though. Neither element will do any damage, as it resists them. Sonic Bombs also don’t work on it.
Like a Congalala, the Blangonga will be accompanied by smaller Blango apes. I’ve found when you first start the hunt, there will likely be two or three also hanging around. As the fight stretches out and moves to new locations, then more Blango will show up. They honestly aren’t any kind of threat and more more a bonus since you can get Colossal Bones from them.
I have noticed that sometimes a second Blangonga can show up if the hunt ends up lasting past the first location change. So in the third location at the Cliffs, you might end up dealing with two Blangongas and a Blango. The thing is, once you get some Rarity 6 equipment on you and a weapon with over 500 damage, you’ll probably take it out after its first “move.”

What are the Blangonga drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?
The Blangonga honestly doesn’t drop many materials, so it’s pretty easy to get all the parts needed for its equipment. Which is good because, as I mentioned earlier, it’s a pretty solid armor set to go with temporarily while you wait for Apex Predator or stronger monster armor that you’ll be able to forge later.
You also are guaranteed a Blangonga Certificate for beating it. The Blangonga Whisker is rare too, but at least one usually comes up as a drop by carving the carcass. The Blangonga Tail can be found via breaking that part. The Blangonga Fang+ and Pelt+ are both quite common, so you’ll pick up plenty as you play.
Two of the most difficult items to forge will be the Blango Vambraces and Blango Coil. The vambraces need a certificate, five Pelt+ parts, three tails, and a Beast Gem. The coil needs a certificate, five Fang+ parts, two whisters, and three Freezer Sacs.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
