How to Find and Beat Gravios in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Gravios is a menace in Monster Hunter Wilds because the big jerk is so covered in armor that it’s difficult to damage. You need to keep wearing it down and assault spots in the hopes of breaking through so you can beat it.

Where do I find the Gravios in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Gravios starts wandering around in the wild after you roll credits after Chapter 3 and head into Chapter 4. You can primarily find it in the Basin and Wyveria. However, since you need to unlock access to Wyveria again by raising your Hunter Rank, the Basin is your best bet.

Gravios likes to lumber around on the bottom most area of that map. I typically first see one in Area 14. However, as you deal damage, it will lead you toward the lava pools on that level, so have Cool Drinks handy. Here’s a screenshot of where I tend to find it:

Once you beat Gravios for the first time, an Optional Quest will be available at the Quest Counter. Also, you’ll probably see it at Wounded Hollow sometimes.

How do I beat a Gravios?

I hate fighting Gravios. This applies to any Monster Hunter game really, but it especially hit me in Monster Hunter Wilds because it is such a shock going from a Yian Kut-Ku or Gypceros and suddenly hitting that rocky slab of a massive wyvern with so many status effect attacks and combo-hampering elements. It always just feels like the dragon won’t take damage. Like you’ll see yourself only dealing like 5-15 points of damage per hit and feel so demoralized, and there’s no solution beyond keeping on because eventually parts will break. And if you do find a groove, it will let out a Strong Roar or Minor Tremor that throws you off and lets it catch you off guard.

Also, Gravios is your big boy. So it’s this massive monster that’s probably going to be the biggest one before regular fights against Jin Dahaad and I just hate it.

Oh, and he likes to spit fire and hang out in the lava in the Basin. Cool. Fun. I hate it.

Plus, he’s going to try and put you to sleep, poison you, and set you on fire. Fun.

All weapons are equally eh against Gravios. You’re not going to get more than a two-star weakness for any part, so use what you like. I went in with an Arkveld Long Sword and it went fine, since some parts like the head, beck, and belly are weaker against that type of damage. Under or near its belly is also a pretty safe spot to position yourself, especially if you stay near the tail, since you can shatter the armor there and maybe even sever the tail.

Like I’ve never actually severed a Gravios tail in this game, because the dude is one giant rock and the fight was so annoying I didn’t willingly go for rematches unless a quest made me. But theoretically, someone in a group with four folks all hitting that part might!

The best course of action is to pick a part of the Gravios body and focus on that for the entire battle. You’ll break the part. Maybe get some materials out of it. Most importantly, busting up that armor means you’ll have a point that will take more damage. Just avoid it’s major, huge AOE fire-based attacks when you do. Gravios likes those.

What are the Gravios drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Gravios has quite a lot of drops. The most common are Gravios Wings, which you can get from breaking its wings, and the Gravios Carapace from breaking its legs, belly, and back. You can net a Gravios Skull from going after the head. The rare Firecell Stone can be found via breaking its back too. I only tended to get a Gravios Medulla if I broke the tail or carved the carcass, but those lucky enough to sever the tail will have a better chance of getting one. The Gravios Pleura+ is relatively rare, but I got some by targeting wounds. One of the rarest finds is the Wyvern Gem. I got one by carving a final carcass, so you may have to hold out for that. Naturally, you also get Gravios Certificates for beating it. Also, the Coma Sac is another rare drop, but you’ll have to do your best and hope one drops as you target wounds and body parts.

The Gravios Mail is one of the difficult armor pieces to craft. You need three Gravios Wings, two Firestones, a certificate, and a Wyvern Gem. The Gravios Greaves are also a pain to make, since those need six Gravios Carapaces, six Gravios Wings, three Coma Sacs, and two Gravios Skulls. The Gravios Coil isn’t too difficult to craft, but make sure you fight and beat some Kranodaths when you fight in the Basin area, since that equipment needs two of the Kranodath Skull+ parts.
