How to Find and Beat Guardian Ebony Odogaron in Monster Hunter Wilds

There are a number of Guardian variants of monsters in Wyveria in Monster Hunter Wilds, and one we encounter during the campaign is Guardian Ebony Odogaron. It takes all the fun of facing the returning Monster Hunter World opponent while adding a mechanic that can take away your chances to exploit wounds.

Where do I find the Guardian Ebony Odogaron in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Your scripted Guardian Ebony Odogaron encounter happens during Chapter 3 of Monster Hunter Wilds. Not long after making camp at one spot, you’ll happen upon it. Which is good, because while that fight isn’t the most strenuous, there are some major encounters that make having a place to relax handy.

You’ll only find Guardian Ebony Odogaron in the Wyveria region. It often prowls the spiral paths leading between layers, though it will also lurk on certain levels when hanging around or weakened. It essentially shows up at any time or season.

If you want to immediately encounter a Guardian Ebony Odogaron, head to Alma at the Quest Counter. Select the quest “Red Eyes in the Night.” It’ll immediately send you out to face one.

Note that while this variant of the Ebony Odogaron is present, there isn’t a standard version or a basic Odogaron around.

How do I beat a Guardian Ebony Odogaron?

Like the past versions of the Odogaron, this is a very agile and quick monster. Think of it like fighting a big squirrel. It likes to quickly dash in, attack with bites and swipes, then fall back. However, since this is a Guardian variant, it also means it will draw upon Wylk to cause spikes to appear. It can then cause those to explode via attacking them, adding AOE attacks to the repertoire. Its Weak Roar can get in the way of you unleashing combos, and it can also inflict both Bleeding and Dragonblight on enemies.

Since it is so large, I liked to try and either attack from underneath or from behind. This is especially handy since you can sever its tail if you attack it enough, netting you pieces like a Guardian Ebony Tail. Said tail and legs are weak against attacks in general, which is helpful. As you wear it down, it will attack less frequently and jump around less. So if you can break its legs and tail to stress it out, it’ll be less evasive. All weapons are equally effective on it, which is handy, and certain parts are more susceptible to Water damage.

I also recommend having a weapon that can inflict Paralysis or Shock Traps. Both work well against it, especially when it’s at its best at the start of the fight. You can’t Exhaust it or use a Sonic Bomb on one, so forget about those. The Wyveria region has some Flashflies around, so using those around one helps give you a second to catch it off guard.

Just remember to also exploit wounds whenever you see them. When a Guardian Ebony Odogaron moves between regions during a hunt, it will usually start drawing energy from Wyveria and heal those in the process.

What are the Guardian Ebony Odogaron drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Some of the items from a Guardian Ebony Odogaron are quite common! Since you’ll likely be attacking the legs a lot, expect wounds and breaking them to get you a lot of Guardian Ebony Claws and Guardian Ebony Sinews. Guardian Ebony Fang can drop from breaking its head. It’s also possible to get Guardian Ebony Scales from repeated attacks, not to mention the Guardian Ebony Tail from severing that. a Guardian Ebony Certificate is awarded upon each successful defeat too. The Guardian Ebony Plate is also quite rare.

A lot of the Guardian Ebony Odogaron drops aren’t terribly difficult to get. Many of them drop as a result of breaking parts like the head, legs, and tail. The only one I ever really had issues with were the fangs, since it does move around quite quickly early in a fight and the Wylk explosions from the front may dissuade you from attacking at that angle. The Guardian Ebony Plate might give you some trouble, though. You’ll need that, alongside a tail, claw, and certificate, to make the G. Ebony Coil.

Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
