How to Find and Beat Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds

I feel like Gypceros is the party-crasher of Monster Hunter Wilds, simply because of how prevalent the wyvern is. It can be found absolutely everywhere. Which is good, since it means it’s easy to hunt down, but bad if you don’t want its blinding flashes to get in the way during Turf Wars.

Where do I find the Gypceros in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Hey, you heading to the Plains? Cool, Gypceros will meet you there. The Basin is your next destination? Gypceros is already in the area near that big crater. Visiting the Cliffs? Gypceros is super familiar with that spot and can be your guide! Paying respects at Wyveria, so is Gypceros! Heading to Wounded Hollow, what a coincidence, because this bird wyvern beat you there!

This monster shows up everywhere. It likes to roam around. You absolutely will have no trouble finding or encountering it. Also, after you beat one, an Optional Quest does show up for it at the Quest Counter for more immediate access.

How do I beat a Gypceros?

Gypceros are more annoying than anything. Like I love them when they pop up in a Turf War against my primary monster, because I can get out of the way, let their Flash ability blind my target, then run in to take advantage of that. But it’s really more frustrating due to its Special Attacks that can interrupt the flow of battle in its favor.

The Gypceros is known for its Flash ability. This acts like the Flashflies does and basically blinds you for a minute. You can’t really act and need to wait for it to wear off. Its Minor Wind Pressure can also temporarily put a pause on your progress. The creature might inflict Poison on you too, but that’s very easy to evade. So unlike the other attacks, you likely can get out of dealing with it.

This means the thing you want to do is immediately go for the Gypceros’ head. It will peck and bite at you, but that spot is weak to all three types of damage! Breaking it can also stop its Flash. Just don’t bother with Thunder-based attacks, as those will do nothing.

Because of the nature of its abilities, some of the typical items won’t work. Don’t waste Flash Pods, Shock Traps, or Sonic Bombs on it. None will work. It also isn’t very susceptible to Poison. But you can try and do things like exhaust it, paralyze it, stun it, or put it to sleep.

Keep focusing on attacking its head, and be ready to run out of the way if you start to hear the sounds and see the movement that suggest a Flash is coming.

What are the Gypceros drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?

If you targeted the Gypceros head like I said, you should get two of its most rare drops. Those are the Novacrystal and Gypceros Head. You’ll also definitely get a Gypceros Certificate. Destroying wounds should also get you the fairly common Dash Extract and Rubbery Hide+. Gypceros Wings are pretty rare, so try and target wounds on them when you fight it. The Gypceros Tail is similarly prized, so aim for that area when you’re behind it.

There are a few pieces of equipment that might be slightly more difficult to craft, due to the rarity of the materials. The High Rank Gypceros Coil is one, since it needs a Novacrystal, a Gypceros Tail, a Gypceros Certificate, and two Rubbery Hide+ parts. Both the Gypceros Helm and Mail need wings, and you’ll need three total if you want to make both.

Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
