How to Find and Beat Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds

One of the cephalopod enemies you’ll encounter in Monster Hunter Wilds is the Xu Wu. It’s limited to one location and, while it doesn’t have an special attacks, it also doesn’t have any major weaknesses you can exploit.

Where do I find the Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds?

The first Xu Wu encounter comes as quite a shock, as the monster blindsides you. After you finish facing the Guardian Ebony Odogaron, a cutscene immediately sends you into a fight against this second foe.

After that fight, the Xu Wu will show up in the Wyveria region. It isn’t the most common enemy in the area, but I didn’t seem to notice its appearances being affected by seasons.

If you want to immediately encounter one without waiting for it to appear in Wyveria, go ahead and head to Alma for the Quest Counter feature. The quest you’re looking for here is “Consumer of Void.” Choose that, and you can face one at any time.

How do I beat a Xu Wu?

As you’d expect from an octopus-like enemy, dealing with Xu Wu’s tentacles is an issue. Up to four of them can be severed, which helps quite a bit! Those are most susceptible to blunt attacks. However, the head and mouth are both pretty weak against all kinds of weapons.

Unlike the earlier cephalopod Nu Udra, there’s no elemental damage to worry about. It swiping at you with its tentacles are the main threat. However, its other major attack involves it exposing its underside, which features a gaping maw with rows of teeth. These attacks are telegraphed by it rearing back on its rear tentacles, exposing the area, and launching at you. It might also grab you and try and pull you into its mouth, but you can button mash the knife attack if caught to free yourself. When it does this, you can do a lot of damage by striking with an Ice-based attack.

What I appreciate about the fight is that the Xu Wu doesn’t have any special attacks. So the main threat does come from keeping out of reach of the tentacles currently targeting you. If you made a Poison weapon, you can use that to poison it. It’s quite weak to that ailment. Flash Pods and Sonic Bombs won’t work on it, though, and it’s pretty difficult to put one to sleep.

What are the Xu Wu drops in Monster Hunter Wilds?

There are quite a few Xu Wu drops in the game, and some of them are sort of difficult to get. The Golden Corneum and Xu Wu Claws tied to the front tentacles are easy to get. As you attack the head, you also should be able to get Xu Wu Fangs without much issue. The Xu Wu Hide isn’t uncommon. However, severing the tentacles is handy, as it nets you things like Xu Wu Tentacle. I found the Xu Wu Cerebrospinal Fluid to be the rarest item to get, and I’d be lucky if one dropped when carving up the final carcass. The Xu Wu Certificate also drops after every successful defeat.

The most difficult to craft pieces of equipment are the Xu Wu Coil and Xu Wu Helm. The former is due to the fact that it needs a certificate, two Xu Wu hides, a Xu Wu Claw, and the cerebrospinal fluid. As for the head piece, you need two hides, two Golden Corneums, a fang, and a Tough Guardian Bone you can get from gathering at Bone Piles in Wyveria.

Monster Hunter Wilds is available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
