How to Get A Pet in Xenoblade Chronicles X

How to get one of Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s pets depends on which point you’re at in the sci-fi RPG. The number of available pets quickly goes from none, to one, to rather a lot once you complete the necessary quests, though if you’re hoping for some furry companions to make BLADE life feel a bit more homely, it won’t happen right away.

Xenoblade Chronicles X gives you a chance to adopt several pets, but only after completing an initial affinity mission. That mission is Nine Lives, and it unlocks after you complete the Chapter 5 story quest Ma-Non Maneuvers. You don’t have to be at the quest’s recommended level of 21 to start, but seeing as there’s a strong Grex and a unique boss at the end of all this, it’s a good idea to be as close to level 21 as you can before tackling it.

Once you meet the requirements, put Gwin in your party. Head to Barista Court in the commercial district, and speak with Matthias. It seems like Matthias is there at any time of day, so you don’t have to fuss with changing time at a field camp for this one. Matthias’ cat is missing, and it’s now your job to find out where she might be. His first clue leads you to the Industrial District, but when that doesn’t pan out, Matthias takes off to one of Primordia’s beaches instead.

That’s a dangerous thing to do for someone with no combat experience. Follow the quest marker to Cliffside Beach, and defeat the level 20 Grex there. Aisha, Matthias’ cat, behaves in a most catlike manner and runs off again, despite his entreaties. Your next step is acquiring three clumps of Kiran Catnip nearby. Xenoblade Chronicles X marks these with an orange quest icon, so they’re impossible to miss.

Return to Matthias to set a trap for Aisha, only for a unique monster to turn up instead. It’s called Greedy Forfex, but apart from having a unique name, the only thing that sets it apart from other crab-like Forfex enemies is that it has more health. Defeat the Forfex, and return to New L.A.

Once the quest ends, you get your own Abyssinian Cat pet and can take on other, non-affinity side quests to collect more pets from the mission board. In our experience, these are standard, low-difficulty quests that require you to find a missing pet or other item.
