As part of the “Kindlers of the Flame” rebuilding Wishvale questline in Octopath Traveler 0, we eventually get to rebuild the town’s ranch and add animals to it for additional cooking ingredients. When this happens, we get one chicken and a task to add two animals, then get two rounds of “harvests” of byproducts from them. But Square Enix doesn’t explain how we get more livestock. It isn’t easy and does involve paying for them, but you won’t find them in just any store.
How do I get animals for my ranch in Octopath Traveler 0?
Well, first you need to progress through ““Kindlers of the Flame” so you can build a ranch in Wishvale. This only comes after you also rebuild the farm and get both Basil and Margot resettled. A generic NPC will then come up to bring up the ranching element of it. You can then immediately place the ranch and also set up two chickens there. These will only offer chicken (meat) and eggs.
However, it’s fairly simple to get two more kinds of livestock at this point if you’re careful and willing to go through some level 20 and level 23-24 areas. In the southern part of Cragspear, which is in the Clifflands Region past Valore, there is Disagreeable Merchant in the slums section selling a cow. You can get this from using the Path Action function and choosing purchase or haggle. (It might be a bit difficult to haggle, so be ready to reroll or pay the full fee.) This town does mean going through two Cragspear Pass areas that have recommended levels of 23 and 24, but at least you unlock Cragspear proper as a fast-travel point after.
The other town nearby with an animal you can acquire is Rippletide. This means going along the North Rippletide Coast that’s to the southeast of Theatropolis. Those are both level 20 areas and are filled with shelled monsters that are weak against axes and staves. The Sailor Turned Merchant there will have a pig you can buy or haggle for with the Path Action feature. The barrier to getting it is lower than the cow.
Once you have both, head back to Wishvale to set them up at the Ranch to start getting ingredients from your two new animals in Octopath Traveler 0. Keep in mind though that you will need to get a Radiant Cornerstone from a fight against one of those stronger-than-usual visible enemies in the field to upgrade the Ranch so you can have more than two animals present at a time.
