How to Recruit Barrett in Starfield

One of the most impressive and likable characters you’ll meet in Starfield is Barrett. The kind, goofy, and sometimes off-kilter member of Constellation is one of the many companions you can add to your crew. But the game doesn’t immediately give you access to him as a companion, despite how early he appears in the story.

How to Recruit Barrett in Starfield

If you want Barrett on your side in Starfield, you’ll have to play through a fair bit of the main story to recruit him. Despite being the first member of Constellation you meet in the game, he is only available after you beat the prologue and “The Old Neighborhood” Constellation main story quests.

Even then, you get three more quests to pick from, and you have to do the “Return to Vectera” quest to unlock Barrett. If you do the other quests first, that will only delay the time before you are able to unlock him for your crew.

Returning to Vectera where you first started the game will allow you to recruit Barrett back to your team after you rescue him from Matsura and the Crimson Fleet pirates. You can even save him without having to kill any of Matsura or his team, if you have a high enough persuasion stat.

After this point, Barrett will be a permanent member of your team. You can bring him along as your active companion or send him to work on your ship or as one of your outpost crew members. His skills allow him to be useful in either situation.

Also yes, you can romance Barrett in Starfield after you recruit him. Despite his lackadaisical personality, he prefers “good guy” actions and approves of them. If his approval goes up high enough, you’ll learn more about his tragic backstory and have the chance to flirt with him.

Starfield is available for Xbox Series X and PC.
