How to Recruit Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3

Lae’zel is the first party member you encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3, even showing up in the game’s opening cutscene. This brash Githyanki fighter aids your escape from the Nautiloid during the prologue. However, once the ship crashes, she is nowhere to be found. She can still return to your party though, if you know where to find her.

Where to Find Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3

To recruit Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll need to head to the Chapel Entrance area of the map. There is a path running along the west side of the chapel itself. Following this path around, you will find a hanging cage and two Tieflings. They have captured a beast, and the beast is Lae’zel. If you’ve already recruited Shadowheart, she won’t be pleased with Lae’zel’s presence. However, she is a useful melee fighter that can act as a tank in the early parts of the game, so rescuing her is a good option.

There are a couple of different ways to recruit her during this encounter, and they both require getting rid of the Tieflings. There’s a peaceful option, which requires a decent Deception roll. Successfully convincing the Tieflings that Lae’zel is too dangerous for them will cause them to leave her in your capable hands. All you need to do then is shoot the floor of the cage with a ranged weapon or spell to free her. After this, she can join your party.

There is also the violent option, which is the one Lae’zel approves of, where you simply choose to attack the Tieflings. For a fight even more in your favor, you can use a Persuasion roll to convince the Tieflings to lower the cage first. Choosing to attack the Tieflings after this will allow Lae’zel to assist the party. Do not choose to attack her however, as even using non-lethal attacks will result in her death during the fight.

A riskier option is to simply shoot the cage down before triggering the conversation with the Tieflings, and then allowing her to take them out. However, some bad initiative or combat rolls can result in her death, so it’s not recommended.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now for PC. A PS5 version will be released on September 6, 2023.
