There are Sage Companions in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, with each giving Link incredible powers. If you are left scratching your head as to how to summon them, though, you are not alone. The game doesn’t make it clear how the feature fully works, even after you’ve unlocked the powerful allies. Here is how to summon Sage Companions in Tears of the Kingdom.

How do I summon a Sage Companion in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

After completing a temple in the “Regional Phenomena” main quest, Link unlocks a Sage Companion to follow him on his journey. You can actually summon and dismiss them anytime you want after obtaining them. I went over 20 hours in my own playthrough before realizing this was a thing.

Press the pause button to access the menu, then scroll over to the “Key Item” tab that houses items such as Link’s Glider in it. To summon a Sage in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, locate the “Vow” item tied to the Companion you want and click “Summon.” To disable them, select “Dismiss” on their Vow in this menu to put them away.

The not-so-well-advertised feature is helpful for several reasons, such as freeing up the visual clutter on your screen. Look, I love the Sage characters as much as the next person, but certain areas can become crowded fast when you have multiple characters on screen at the same time. Because Companions are automatically summoned after being obtained, the special menu gives you more control over how you want to use them.

Some players have also reported their Companions failing to enable after unlocking them due to the cutscene where Link summons them not triggering. Regardless of the reason, you are going to want to know how to use the Key Item menu.

That’s it! Unlike Link’s Master Sword, there isn’t any penalty for how much you use your Companions besides their usual power cooldowns. As long as you have defeated a temple and unlocked a Sage, you can access their Vow anytime in the Key Items menu.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
