How to Survey a Planet in Starfield

In Starfield there are more than 1,000 planets you can visit across the galaxy. These planets can be fully explored, most of the reason you want to do this is to survey the planet in full. Scanning the planet for its flora, resources, and fauna will allow you to earn credits and experience.

How to 100% survey a planet in Starfield

If you want to know how to 100% survey a planet in Starfield, the game doesn’t, unfortunately, explain it well. The goal is simple: scan every piece of flora, fauna, and resource to its fullest. In addition, you have to discover every major planetary trait.

Some planets only have a handful of each of planetary traits, such as four creatures, two plants, and four resources. Others have eight of each, making for a lengthy process. On the other hand, you can find remote moons where there is no life and there are only two resources to discover.

No matter how many of these exist on a planet, the goal remains the same. Explore the planet and find each target object and scan it. You can scan using the scanner, which is tied to LB on controller. While looking at an object and in range, you can press A on the controller to scan it.

Unfortunately, the job isn’t done for that item, though. At the start without upgrading certain skills, it will require eight separate scans of a creature or plant to 100% it. Resources, fortunately, only need one scan for each one.

This effectively means you could only have two animals on the planet, but each animal requires eight scans, so you would have to find both creatures 16 different times on the world. This can be quite time-consuming, depending on the planet.

Thankfully, you can build an outpost and hire crew to help with scanning the planet. If you fully survey a planet 100%, you’ll receive the survey plate data, which you can sell for some decent credits.

Starfield is available for the Xbox Series X and PC.
