The manhwa I Love Amy may feature some comedic elements, but UNNI works through some seriously dark situations throughout the comic, and volume three feels designed to get through multiple characters’ trauma before things get wrapped up. To the author’s credit, none of this feels like it is rushed. The execution of the first two volumes do a good job of introducing Amy Lee and Bibi Reden, then showing the relationship developing between them. It’s just really emphasizing how both characters’ past led to them becoming the way they are before giving them (and us) a chance to possibly be happy.

Editor’s Note: There will be some minor spoilers for the I Love Amy manhwa below. Also, note that if you do pick up the volume, there are situations that involve major parental abuse, bodily harm, and stalking.

As a quick refresher, I Love Amy’s first two volumes really sort of focus on Bibi falling (obsessively) for a guy at her school named Peter because he helped her. He sees him associate with Amy, then gets close to her. Initially, due to seeing her as competition and possibly choosing to wipe her out as a result. But for some reason, she ends up choosing instead to make Amy her “ally” in winning Peter over. For Amy’s part, she actually seems to enjoy Bibi’s company and finds her quite pretty, so the two end up genuinely getting along. But she also admits that she knows how toxic the other girl is.

Which is basically where we are with the start of the third volume of I Love Amy. Amy finally made up with Camilla, while also letting us as readers see that the issue that resulted in said issue between them was due to Amy’s own background with relationship trauma due to the major incident with her mother. (That’s the one which even led to her living with her aunt in the first place.) But with that resolution and hint at how deeply Amy’s still affected by her own trauma comes a new situation. Peter asked someone who wasn’t Bibi to prom, and Bibi saw it as it happened.

But here’s the thing, and it’s the new situation that propels us to the climax and into the finale in I Love Amy. As Bibi deals with that realization and starts to prepare her “revenge” for Peter, she realizes how she feels about Amy. She starts to work through some of her trauma regarding her past and desperate search for connection that drives her completely-unreasonable-and-terrifying behavior. Which leads to her realizing her own thoughts for Amy. Meanwhile, we have Amy now encountering the same situation with Amy that she once experienced with Camilla. Her own past and PTSD resurfaced. This, in turn, seems to prepare her for the same sort of situation and block that happened before.

Of course, we’ve already seen Bibi is a very different kind of person than Camilla. The first two volumes already established how (dangerous) she can be if someone says no to her. Avoiding her isn’t an option. And, while this is a bad thing for sure, the nature of UNNI’s story and how she handles it propels the story forward in a way that makes sense and perhaps offers the potential for a resolution that could be happy, in a way! Or, perhaps, at least end with Amy facing the trauma she’s still not recovered from as a result of that major incident involving her mother. (I mean, as happy as it can be, given the circumstances.)

I Love Amy really doesn’t shy away from the traumatic backgrounds both Amy and Bibi experienced going into the third volume in preparation for the finale. It’s dark! Both girls went through some terrible things that shaped them forever. I even found myself wondering if Amy, in some way, is choosing the path she is as a result of her PTSD and past relationships. Seeing how their dynamic and Bibi’s (unsettling) behavior comes up when faced with the climax’s challenge and end of the series almost makes it feel like we’re being set up with a situation that could be happy, but also maybe not healthy.

Volumes 1-3 of the I Love Amy manhwa are available via Yen Press, and volume 4 will be released on December 8, 2026.
