In case Captain N wasn’t enough nostalgia, Shout Factory is releasing the second Super Mario Brothers Super Show box set next month. There are eighteen episodes of the series in this set, including one of my favorites, “Bad Rap” where Mario has to rap to save the King of Rapland. There are also a couple of bonus episodes on the disc. Due to legalities surrounding the live action segments with Captain Lou Albano the episodes were going to be completely cut. Brian Ward, the producer of the DVDs, is a fan of the show and he fought for them to be included in the release, but the live action parts had to be cut out.
The second DVD release brings in a bunch of fan submitted extras like a cosplay galler and a segment starring rawmeatcowboy from GoNintendo taking a trip to meet Captain Lou Albano at a fan signing. Brian’s favorite extra is concept art that details the original floor plan of the series. “In one of my trips to DiC, I ran across the original pitch for the show and inside that pitch was the floor plan and detailed concept drawing of what the live-action set would look like. It also broke down several key components of the set, like the Rat-a-Gator, the pizza phone, the trash chute, etc. So I made each of those key elements clickable and now, you can watch a short piece on each of them that includes the original concept art and a piece of video that shows you the final product in use.”
I was already sold when I saw “Koopa Claus” was on the second disc. Who doesn’t want to see Mario save Christmas?
