Knights and Bikes is a co-op action adventure from people who previously worked on LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. It’s inspired by Earthbound and Secret of Mana and films such as The Goonies. It’s currently on Kickstarter and also has a Steam Greenlight page.
It’s set in the 1980s on the island of Penfurzy, just off the coast of Cornwall in the UK, and follows two young girls as they investigate the truth of the myths that are written about this remote island.
Those two girls are Nessa and Demelza: “Nessa is an orphan from the mainland, who has run away to the island searching for her past and her identity. Demelza is a video game-obsessed islander searching for the truth using clues from her favorite game.”
It’s designed to be played by two players, one controlling each girl, but you can have the AI control the other girl if you’re playing solo. Also in your party is Captain Honkers, Demelza’s pet goose, as well as the pickled severed head of a fallen-knight.
You can explore the island by foot or by bike, rushing through its wildernesses, and if you find treasure you can use it to upgrade your girl’s abilities or gain new ones. Islanders you meet will give you quests that involve solving puzzles, finding ancient relics, and recovering lost loved ones.
There are also dungeons to fight your way through in real-time battles where the violent spirits that the island’s myths are based on thrive.
