People will soon have a chance to begin making their own games on the Nintendo Switch. The SmileBASIC Switch game will finally appear outside of Japan on April 23, 2020. That’s when SmileBoom will bring SmileBASIC 4 to the eShop in Europe. It will cost £19.99/€21.99.
SmileBASIC 4 allows people to both create their own games or play BASIC games other Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS have created within the app. When making games, people can plug in a USB keyboard or mouse to help. There’s a guide for beginners and sample programs are included. 40 premade background themes can be used and it has 100 sound effects. It even supports the Joy-Cons and Labo Toy-Cons. If people just want to play, they can search through an online database, register their favorite titles, and offer up “likes” to things others have made to show support and boost their popularity.
Here’s a SmileBASIC Switch trailer showing what sorts of games people could make or play with the software. It spends about a minute looking at titles from different genres and what the creation tools look like.
SmileBASIC 4 is immediately available on the Nintendo Switch in Japan. It will appear on the European eShop on April 23, 2020. A North American launch date has yet to be announced.
