A new gameplay element will be introduced in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. Players will be able to use Battle Cards in fights against enemies.

A Battle Card is an item that can inspire various positive effects. It could provide better rewards, like more experience from the fight or additional coins. It can also improve party members’ status, by perhaps boosting their attack.

The Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Battle Cards also affect enemies. Two examples provided in the Nintendo Direct were one that could directly damage opponents, and another card lowered the foes’ levels.

People can also scan in six amiibo to create custom Battle Cards to use in the game. Compatible amiibo include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Yoshi.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam will be released on the Nintendo 3DS on January 22, 2016.
