Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – The Monster Hunter Missions

Kojima Productions designed a handful of not secret Monster Hunter missions for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Fighting Rathalos is optional. Actually, you won’t run into the guest monster unless you’re looking for him. A Felyne, the cat-like critter in the picture, is hiding in one of the EX missions. Find him and Snake can start monster hunting.

The handful of Monster Hunter missions take place on a small grassy field. There’s no place to hide and the Love Box is woefully ineffective. Each battle has one giant monster like Rathalos or Tigrex and Velociprey. While the Velociprey go down after a single rocket impact, they respawn making the little blue dinosaurs a constant distraction.

If you just want to avoid the Velociprey there is a (semi) safe spot. A tiny elevated island can give Snake some relief because the Velociprey can’t jump on the ledge. This spot also has a Felyne and a fire pit where you can roast rations. Tigrex can still swoop in and knock you out so you aren’t invincible here. Still, it’s a good spot to wall up and drop Supply MKs.

Visually, that uniform… doesn’t appear to provide much protection and the Monster Hunter monsters are tough to takedown. It’s amazing just how effective huge swords are against these beasts compared to RPGs! Like the boss battles, the Monster Hunter missions are designed primarily for cooperative play. You’ll want to carry some stun grenades, rockets, and the battle suit for the fight.

There are three Monster Hunter “monsters” spread out on day and night missions. “Monster” is in quotes because the third monster is actually a scaly version of Gear Rex.
