Yesterday’s True Crime: Hong Kong script leak featured protagonist, Detective Wei Shen, reuniting with an old acquaintance in prison, following his return to Hong Kong from America.
Today, we have more scenes from the script, but they don’t pick up where yesterday’s scene left off. Instead, we meet a new character, Mikey, who isn’t exactly friends with Wei. However, while the two have their differences, they end up working together to protect a ringleader named Uncle Po from a rival gang at a hospital.
Mob Headquarters: MIKEY is there with some low-level thugs, hanging out, waiting to see if Winston and Wei show up. MIKEY knows Winston is in trouble with the higher-ups and is savoring the outcome. While MIKEY and Winston aren’t exactly enemies, they clearly aren’t friends.
EXT. UNCLE PO’S APARTMENT
Winston and Wei arrive, finding Mikey leaning against the wall next to the door with a couple of thugs. Ponytail is finishing a conversation with Mikey; he looks at Winston and Wei as he walks off.
(to Mikey) I’ll run it past Big Smile Lee, see what he says.
Mikey nods, already focused on Winston and Wei.
(cocky, amused) Hey Winston… what’s wrong, you look a little pale?
Wei, this is Mikey. He talks a lot of shit but he’s harmless enough.
(to Winston) Dogeyes tells me you’ve been throwing your weight around. What happened? You two used to be so close.
(gruff) Is he here?
Mikey smiles, savoring the tension for a moment, then shakes his head.
Nah, he left a while ago.
(adding) I guess Uncle Po must’ve thought Dogeyes wasn’t the one to blame for all this… (INFERRING WINSTON IS IN TROUBLE- WE CAN SEE MIKEY TAKES SUBTLE PLEASURE IN THIS)
Mikey opens the door for them.
You should go in. They’re waiting for you.
Winston gives Mikey a surly nod as he passes through the door, followed by Wei.
SCENE 2 HONG KONG ACTION– UNCLE PO ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT
High tension scene – fast paced, trying to protect themselves & UNCLE PO against an assassination attempt by rival gang 18K.
INT. HOSPITAL – UNCLE PO’S ROOM
Wei runs into the room. Mikey is there, ready to shoot him, but relaxes once he recognizes Wei.
18K tried to get to Uncle Po– they’re all over the place.
Yeah, I ran into a few of them on the way in.
Mikey nods. They quickly take up defensive positions, staying covered.
There’s a tech room down the hall… We might be able to use the computers to shut down the elevators. Fewer access points.
Wei– already moving out of the room—
I’m on it.
Mikey continues to protect UNCLE PO – stays alert, scans the room, gun at the ready exits the hospital room and joins Wei. Wei and MIKEY both have their weapons drawn. Alert, they’re taking advantage of a lull in the action to catch their breath; still, they’re in tactically sound positions and have proper trigger discipline. Outside, far off, police sirens can be heard.
You were at the meeting, right? Who won the election?
Two Chin Tsao.
(brief snicker) Heh, That guy?
Uncle Po better pull through…
Mikey laughs. Police sirens grow ever closer, Mikey nods in the direction of the sound;
Let’s get out of here.
Mikey scans his surroundings & starts moving out. Wei leaves too.
Wei and Mikey get out of a car, checking their surroundings attentively.
I think we’re clear.
Mikey nods in agreement. He takes out a pack of cigarettes, offering one to Wei. Wei accepts. Mikey takes a drag, nods approvingly at Wei’s new Sun On Yee tattoo.
Guan Yu. Nice.
He was definitely looking out for us tonight.
Mikey shakes his head.
No one was looking out for us… we just got lucky.
(then) The thing is… no one stays lucky forever.
Wei considers this for a moment, then shrugs.
This is the life we chose.
(off his look) Feels like the game has changed. It used to be a brotherhood.
There was a code, even amongst rival triads. Now we’re killing each other at weddings, and even in fucking hospitals… nothing is sacred anymore.
Wei nods thoughtfully as Mikey trails off. They smoke in silence for a beat until MIKEY seems to snap out of it–
We should split up in case they’re still looking for us.
(nodding) I’ll see you around.
They walk off in opposite directions.
