Super Paper Mario is a semi throw back to the classic 2D Mario games. Players hold the Wii remote horizontally like a NES gamepad and shake the controller to do extra moves such as breaking out of ice. While you’re mostly running around on a 2D flat Paper World players can press a button and switch into 3D mode to search for secret paths in the levels. However, Mario is the only character that can go between dimensions and speak to characters only found in the third dimension. Bowser and Peach (the other playable characters) have their own abilities, Bowser breathes fire and Peach can glide over large gaps with her parasol. Since Intelligent Systems is designing the game they made sure to add in RPG elements like leveling up. Mario’s score, which is earned by stomping on goombas and breaking blocks serve as Mario’s experience points. When Mario levels up his attacks give extra damage and his hit points are extended. Mario and the other playable characters can gain new skills by finding Pixls which give Mario the ability to transform into a paper airplane and throw enemies. I appreciate how Intelligent Systems melded the two franchises and they just might have a huge hit on their hands that isn’t a SRG or Super Metroid.
