New Game By Former Shin Megami Tensei Staff Gives A Literal Take On “Shrine Maidens”

Kazunari Suzuki, who worked on the earlier titles of the Shin Megami Tensei series is working on a new browser game that’s all about shrine maidens… as in literal shrine maidens, girls that are actual shrines.

The game is called Yashiro ni Hoheto by DMM Games, it’s a browser strategy RPG, and as previously mentioned, it features a cast of cute girls that are the personification of shrines.

It takes place back when the center of Japan was known as “Heian no Kyo,” or “capital of tranquility and peace,” during a time when impurity and evil was emerging in the world. The setting is about all the gods and goddesses responding to the prayers of mankind and appear in the form of beautiful young girls that transformed from shrines.

These girls are known as “Shamiko” or “Shrine Shrine Maidens,” if you will, and the one that will be there to eradicate evil with the Shamiko and save everything will be none other than you, the player.

Kazunari Suzuki is in charge of the main scenario and world setting of Yashiro ni Hoheto. He previously worked on scenarios, dialogue, demon settings, world settings, and much more in the earlier Megami Tensei games, such as Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, Shin Megami Tensei, Shin Megami Tensei II, Shin Megami Tensei If… and more.

Aya Nishitani, who also worked on the Digital Devil Story and Megami Tensei series will work alongside Kazunari Suzuki on the main scenario and world setting.

Tabletop RPG designer Kobayashi Masachika, best known for the tabletop game, Utakaze: The Tiny Hero RPG, will be in charge of the scenario as well as character scenarios.

The trailer also says “planned for release on PC browsers first,” so that means we can expect to see the game come to smartphones in Japan after the browser game launches in Summer 2017.

Those who register early can get Itsukushima (an actual Shrine  by Hiroshima Bay) voiced by Megumi Nakajima as part of an pre-registration campaign.
