On exactly April 1, 2026 in Japan, Square Enix “announced” NieR: Cosmic Horror on the Japanese account for games in the series. This was accompanied by a brief teaser video and a suggestion this is a “new project.” Since it is only April Fools’ Day 2026 in Japan now, this clip hasn’t appeared on any NieR English-language channels yet. We’ll have to wait and see if a similar video shows up everywhere tomorrow with an official translation. Given the date and time, this should be one of the company’s jokes for the day just like the return of the FFVII Ever Crisis high school AU event

Here’s the full NieR: Cosmic Horror teaser that appeared on April Fools’ Day 2026. It features a robotic entity with a tentacle for a head in front of Emil’s face. The notation for this alleged project also said it is “coming soon.”

In the meantime, most of the more recent (and real) NieR announcements had to do with Automata. For example, the anime adaptation launched. That’s available to stream via Crunchyroll and is complete. (Physical Blu-rays are only available in Japan.) At the end of 2025, Square Enix also updated the Switch version of the game so it would be playable on the Switch 2. Most importantly, a February 2026 video from Square Enix ended with “NieR: Automata to be continued,” suggesting a sequel or additional project is in the works.

NieR: Automata is available on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the anime is on Crunchyroll, and Square Enix’s books division handled a number of spin-off books worldwide. NieR showed up on the PS3 and Xbox 360, while NieR Replicant launched on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. NieR Reincarnation was available on mobile devices, but shut down in April 2024. The NieR: Cosmic Horror teaser appeared on April Fools’ Day 2026.
