Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 systems and some controllers will be updated in Europe and replaced by versions that allow owners to replace their own batteries, but the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED will be discontinued in “mid-February 2027” as a result of this change. This is all starting in Summer 2026, though the original systems will still be made throughout 2026 and some compliant controllers may not appear until early 2027.

New European regulations require devices to allow people to be able to replace their own batteries. While the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED will be made in Europe in 2026, the company won’t release new models that adhere to the requirement for batteries. It also noted its official store will stop selling all three models starting in mid-February 2027.

In the case of the Switch 2 systems and controllers that will follow European requirements for batteries, those will start showing up in Summer 2026. That will start with new original Joy-Con options. The new Switch 2 with replaceable 5172mAh batteries instead of 5220mAh will show up in Fall 2026. The Joy Con 2 controllers and Pro Controllers launch in Winter 2026 there, though the latter will have 897mAh batteries instead of 1070mAh ones. Finally, both the updated N64 and GameCube controllers will appear in “early 2027.”

The Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED will appear in Europe throughout 2026, but will be discontinued by February 2027.
