Paramount is following in the footsteps of Warner Bros. and taking a stab at video game development. Behind closed doors, Paramount Digital Entertainment showcased a game based on The War of the Worlds. I thought this would be a space shooter or a third person shooter since the genre is quite popular.
And, I was totally off. The War of the Worlds is a platformer inspired by Flashback and fellow alien game Out of this World.
The game puts you in control of an everyman just trying to survive in London after a Martian invasion. Players use the d-pad and two buttons to hop through eleven levels… and you won’t have futuristic alien weapons to help you. The War of the Worlds was designed so players have to avoid an unstoppable Martian army with drones, mechanical spiders, lethal black smoke, and 140ft Tripods. Levels are designed with puzzles for players to solve instead of alien attacks.
Other Ocean, the team behind the quirky DSiWare download Dark Void Zero, is creating The War of the Worlds and based it on the 1953 film. They even got a movie star, Patrick Stewart, to do the game’s voiceovers.
The War of the Worlds is slated for release this fall on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.
