For those of you just wanting a basic understanding, I got your back. Here is a spoiler-free explanation of Metis as a character. As you can see, Metis is essentially an android machine in the same vein of Aigis. She is an anti-shadow suppression weapon, designed to take out shadows.

Metis appears to the members of SEES following the events of the base game. On March 31, she shows up and attacks the group. At the same time this happens, a new dungeon known as the Abyss of Time appears. Metis wishes to be by Aigis’ side and fight alongside her in the Abyss of Time as her younger sister.
