Photo Fighter X is a fighting game and a photo powered fighting game engine. The DSiWare download takes photos and uses them for backgrounds, characters, and special moves. So, you know, you can throw giant apples or cats like fireballs, if you want.
Players take pictures of themselves (or their pets?), set up moves (one turns you into a giant!), and record sound effects to make a custom photo fighter. Check the official site’s movie to see how this works. Eight of them can be saved and used in a Mortal Kombat style fighting game.
Both players use one DS so the controls sounds like a PC fighting game. Player one moves with the D pad and has L as a general attack button. Press it to kick. Forward + L is for punch, back + L shoots a fireball, and down + L activates your special attack. Player two moves with the face buttons (XABY) and R is their attack button. You’re going to have to put your DSi on a table for this. Perhaps, Nintendo made Photo Fighter X’s versus mode with the DSi XL in mind.
The game also has single player, side scrolling beat ‘em up mode where you punch through 100 photo enemies, but the multiplayer mode is really Photo Fighter X’s selling point.
Even if it doesn’t “work” like a proper fighting game, Photo Fighter X should be a riot. Throwing giant apples as fireballs? Count me in! The 200 DSiWare Points ($2) will be available to Japanese Nintendo DSi owners on December 16.
