A PlayStation 4 entry in The Idolmaster series has been in development, with Bandai Namco offering a brief glimpse of the game at the Masters of Idol World 2015 10th anniversary event back in July. More comprehensive reveals have been planned for next year. On January 28, a Niconico live stream at 9-10pm JT will be held, and Weekly Famitsu will run a feature on the game.

The last, traditional entry for consoles in The Idolmaster series was The Idolmaster: One for All, released in 2014 for the PlayStation 3. Since then, only spin-offs like The Idolmaster: Gravure for You!, The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls Starlight Stage, and The Idolmaster Must Songs have been released for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and Apple iOS and Android devices.

A release date has yet to be announced for the PlayStation 4 The Idolmaster game. Bandai Namco has also not mentioned if the Cinderella Girls idols or Jupiter, the male idol group, will play important parts in the game. The Cinderella Girls characters could appear in The Idolmaster: One for All via DLC, and Jupiter has been a rival group since The Idolmaster 2.
