The new Mega Evolution: Delta Reign expansion of the Pokemon Trading Card Game feels like an intentional counterbalance to this year’s special set, 30th Celebration. While that release was all about showcasing Pokemon, Delta Reign cards include interesting support options. While that set was for collectors, Delta Reign is fundamentally a players’ set. And as we’re both exhausted by the supply scarcity and eager to see The Pokemon Company focus more on the gameplay? This is a very good thing.
The coolest Pokemon Trading Card Game Delta Reign cards
Well it’s probably Mega Rayquaza ex. Surprising no one, the centerpiece of the set’s branding is a powerful card that can do serious damage. Its ability just slightly accelerates its energy by one, which is helpful for its dual-type cost but not a game-changer. But its attack does 50 damage for each fire and lightning energy on your board, meaning it hits harder every turn. Oh, also it’s a Basic with 280 HP. Sure, three prizes if it dies, but that’ll take a while.
Visually, we like the experimentation with art styles and materials. Nidoran is hand-stitched. Surskit has a very painterly look that really works with its water ripples. Onix, Inkay, Electabuzz… they all feel like their creators had an intent behind their work, and that’s excellent. We know the company loves its big 3D renderings, but we’ll take this every day of the week when we can get it. And in the Illustration Rares, we especially like Kecleon for the same reason. It’s cool to look at, y’all! (Just don’t try to, uh, read it.)

The most meta-relevant Delta Reign cards
We think Mega Rayquaza Cap could get some play. It adds an attack that searches and attaches Basic Energy to anyone on your side wearing one, making it a highly effective accelerator. There are also three new special energy cards, though they’re rare. Bubbly Water Energy prevents Special Conditions, Growing Grass Energy adds 20 HP and Nitro Fire Energy returns to your hand if discarded by an attack. All are nice bonuses if you’re already running that type.
Could an Incarnate deck be viable? Thundurus, Landorus, Tornadus and Enamorus all have abilities that wipe out all their colorless energy requirements if they’re all in play. Tornadus benefits most, making his 70-damage, draw-to-six attack free. But Enamorus can hit hard against EXes, Landorus can hit hard and discard a stadium, and… Thundurus is also one of them! We think these would be more usable if there were a second free attacker, but still.

The most interesting Pokemon Trading Card Game Delta Reign cards
Our pick here has to be the Legendary Stadium cards. While two-card creatures were printed in the distant past, this is the first appearance of two-card Stadiums. This leads to art that’s more genuinely spacious in a way that fits with a card type that’s supposed to be containing everything else. More importantly, though, it lets these have effects that are game-defining.
The most effective, to us, is Legendary Summit. It reduces the Prize reward for colorless creatures by one, and if you build around it, you can do some shenanigans previously impossible in a game that’s been around for 30 years. It’s helped by a Supporter, Tate & Liza’s Training, that draws two cards and returns to your hand if one of these Stadiums is in play. Another, Aarune, searches for three Supporter and Stadium cards, meaning you can set up precisely this combo in one fell swoop.

The cutest Pokemon Trading Card Game Delta Reign cards
There are some great contenders in this batch. In particular, there are species that we’ve seen go perhaps a bit too far and miss the cute zone that are balanced and adorable. Like Azurill and Pawmo! Combee and Fletchling combine the lush art style approach we mentioned earlier to great effect. And heck, we even like the new Morpeko. (And, of course, the Illustration Rares are full of options.)
