Sony announced a shift to all-digital game copies and away from physical ones for the PS5 on the same day it announced it will be closing the PlayStation Store for the PS3 and Vita. The storefront shutdown will start in August 2026 for those two platforms and continue until all close in July 2027. The phase out of physical copies will happen in January 2028. In the case of both, the company mentioned it came to decisions to focus on “best gaming experiences” and “consumer trends.”

In the case of the PS3 and Vita PlayStation Store shutdown, there are no specific dates for when they will be closing. We only have general windows for both storefronts. Sony did mention this will stop new purchases. It didn’t mention how it might affect downloads for titles people already own.

Here’s the timeline for the PS3 PlayStation Store closure:

  • August 2026: Store closes in Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
  • Late 2026: Store shutdowns in Latin America and the Middle East. (Note that specific countries were not mentioned.)
  • July 2027: Store support ends worldwide.

The PlayStation Vita access will continue for a bit longer, as only a worldwide 2027 shutdown was mentioned.

In the case of the end of PS5 physical copies of retail games, Sony mentioned it will only apply to new games. So any titles released in January 2028 and beyond will only be available in the digital storefront. The statement didn’t mention how this might affect third-party publishers or retailers like Limited Run Games. The announcement did mention that retailers will still sell digital copies of its titles.

The PS3 PlayStation Store will be closing first in Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua in August 2026, leading to a worldwide shutdown on both that console and Vita everywhere by July 2027. We’ll stop seeing physical PS5 game copies starting in January 2028.
