We’re seeing a lot of impressive Switch 2 ports now that the system is a year old, and Capcom’s Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter is another example of a great one. It looks and runs wonderfully, regardless of how you play. It also wraps up a lot of the important extras, such as a playable Vergil,

As a reminder, Devil May Cry Devil 5 Hunter Edition brings together new and old faces to fight back against a new threat to humanity. Newcomer V contracts Devil May Cry’s Dante and Nero to bring down Urizen, a demon growing the tree Qliphoth in Red Grave City in order to become lord of the underworld. Throughout their three viewpoints, we get a better understanding of who Urizen and V are, see the return of other series regulars like Trish and Lady, and see the revival of the rivalry between Dante and Vergil. In terms of series’ stories, I think it’s one of the better ones! V and Nero’s partner Nico are integrated well into the cast. It feels monumental. Everyone one of the main trio gets a good amount of screen-time too.

I will say that I’m still a bit disappointed with the Vergil mode that is present right from the outset in the Switch 2 port of in Devil May Cry Devil 5 Hunter Edition. This is in no way related to gameplay. He’s a great character to actually use in combat and feels distinct from Dante, Nero, and V. Rather, the narrative there is nearly completely absent and doesn’t really go through the story in this entry. There are two scenes, but otherwise it feels separate and a complement to the main campaign designed to be played after. It’s nice to have, but is purely supplemental.

And the gameplay is quite strong here. Each of the leads plays differently. Dante relies on the Devil Arms and Guns, with Gunslinger, Royalguard, Swordmaster, and Trickster styles that prioritize certain types of attacks and combat approaches like ranged and melee attacks and either countering or evasion. Nero has his sword attacks via Red Queen, his Blue Rose gun for ranged hits, and his breakable Devil Breaker arms that can pull and pull you toward enemies or use a special Break Age move that’s powerful and breaks them in the process. V can use his cane for attacks, but also relies on his familiars Griffon, Nightmare, and Shadow to attack as a sort of summoner. Vergil can dual-wield Yamato with Mirage Edge, has the Beowulf gauntlets and greaves set, and uses Mirage Blades for his ranged attacks.

The big deal here is that Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition performs flawlessly on the Switch 2. I primarily played in Handheld mode, though I did go through the first eight missions in the main campaign docked. Framerate remained at a stable 60fps. In handheld especially, that felt like a testament to the quality of the port. It does look better when docked, of course. Still, even when in handheld the lighting textures, and character models all look great.

However, there are some downsides to this release. While Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition runs and looks fantastic on the Switch 2 and includes Vergil, a lot of cosmetic DLC, extra weapons, additional battle music, more voices, and the live-action cutscenes, it omits some Special Edition features. Legendary Dark Knight mode removes the Musou sort of approach to take on hordes of enemies and locks us out of the Turbo mode’s 1.2x speed option. So what we have here isn’t the complete version we already saw on other the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition on Switch 2 is an impressive port that still feels fresh even considering its age. It’s performance is great, especially in handheld mode. If you did already play it on a different platform, specifically if you grabbed the Special Edition, then the omissions mean you could skip this version and not miss anything. But if this would be your first time following Dante, Nero, and V on this new adventure, it’s a great way to play it.

Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition will be on the Switch 2 on June 23, 2026, the original game is on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the Special Edition showed up on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
