Silent Hill 2 Remake ESRB Rating Mentions a Line From Mary

The ESRB rating for the Silent Hill 2 remake is live and, it is rated Mature just like the original. The ratings summary for it also references James’ trip to Heaven’s Night in town and a reminder from Mary about a videotape.

The content descriptors are different between the original Silent Hill 2 and the remake. Both games feature warnings about “violence” and “blood and gore.” However, new to the remake are ones for “language” and “sexual themes.” There is no rating summary for the past entry, so it isn’t possible to compare.

However, the Heaven’s Night strip club was in both the original game and is referenced in the ESRB description for the Silent Hill 2 remake. When discussing the “sexual themes” present in this game, the description mentioned elements from the club and posters of its performers.

The reference to Mary comes up at the end of the Silent Hill 2 rating summary. One of her lines is directly referenced there. It reads, “Remember that time in the hotel? You said you took everything. But you forgot that videotape we made.” Those who played the original may recall what that referenced.

Here’s the full rating summary for the game from the ESRB:

This is a horror adventure game in which players assume the role of a man returning to a mysterious town while being tormented by his past. From a third-person perspective, players explore the town of Silent Hill, interact with characters, and battle humans and creatures (e.g., Pyramid Head, mannequins, monsters). Players use pistols, shotguns, rifles, and knives to kill enemies. Combat is highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. Some environments depict large bloodstains and/or intestines/organs on walls, floors, and surrounding bodies. Cutscenes and illustrations depict further instances of violence and/or blood and gore: characters impaled; a character suffocated to death with a pillow; enemies with body parts sewn together. The game contains some suggestive/sexual material: characters pole-dancing in strip-club settings; posters of women in revealing outfits (e.g., bra and thong, deep cleavage); dialogue alluding to sexuality and/or sexual abuse/misconduct (e.g., “Remember that time in the hotel? You said you took everything. But you forgot that videotape we made”; “Don’t touch me…You’re only after one thing…Or you could just force me, like he always did.”). The word “sh*t” appears in the game.

The Silent Hill 2 remake is in development for PS5 and PC, and Konami hasn’t released a release date yet.
