Snag Skype on the latest PSP Network Update

This article is over 16 years old and may contain outdated information

It’s the end of the month and Sony came through with their promise to bring Skype to PSP-2000 owners. Firmware 3.90 is live. I’ve tested Skype out with the PSP headset and it works pretty much the same if you’re playing with VoIP. I can’t really imagine sending IMs through it though.

I don’t believe anyone has made a public report testing Skype with the Talkman microphone yet. The metallic accessory was originally going to be sold alone and in twin packs to share with friends in Japan. Sony isn’t selling the pack because it wasn't up to par and it’s the reason why Skype got pushed back in Japan. Now that the new firmware is out I’m curious to see if Sony disabled Talkman microphone support altogether.

Also since new firmware is in the air, I imagine the PSP homebrew community is already working on a custom firmware upgrade. Will they be able to patch Skype for the PSP to work on the bulky PSP-1000? It would be an impressive feat if the homebrew community pulled it off!
